The Hibiscus Coast lives by the sea. Orewa grew from 1950s beach subdivisions into a busy town during the 1960s and 1970s, the Whangaparāoa Peninsula filled with family homes along its main road, and Silverdale is now surrounded by the newer Millwater and Milldale developments. A large share of homes are within sight or sound of the Hauraki Gulf, and salt air is the main thing that shortens the life of an outdoor unit here.
That shapes how we install. On coastal homes we plan the outdoor unit position before anything else, keeping it out of direct spray and wind where the site allows, and we recommend a heat pump service at least once a year so the coil can be rinsed and fixings checked. Older beach houses often need a heat pump installation sized for single glazing and little insulation, while new Millwater homes are well sealed and benefit from a ventilation system that keeps moisture and stale air moving.

Common Home Types in the Hibiscus Coast
Orewa's 1960s and 1970s beach houses were built before insulation was mandatory and many still have single glazing, so they lose heat quickly in winter and need sizing for heat loss rather than floor area. Peninsula homes from Red Beach to Army Bay span the 1970s to today, often with living areas facing the view through large windows that bring both winter heat loss and summer glare. Millwater, Milldale and newer Whangaparāoa homes are 2010s and later builds with insulation and double glazing, where smaller units, summer cooling and good ventilation matter more than raw heating capacity.
What the Hibiscus Coast Conditions Mean for Heating
BRANZ maps sites within about 500 metres of the coast as the highest sea spray zone, and much of the Hibiscus Coast is closer than that, so outdoor unit fins, casings and brackets corrode faster than inland. Salt builds up most on sheltered surfaces that rain does not wash, which is why rinsing the outdoor coil at each service matters. The peninsula catches wind off the Gulf from several directions, so units need firm mounting and should not face straight into the prevailing weather. Winter humidity is high across Auckland, and holiday homes that sit closed up for weeks can get musty, which is a good case for ventilation and dry mode.

Heat Pumps Hibiscus Coast FAQs
How often should a heat pump near the beach be serviced?
We recommend at least once a year for coastal homes, and you can clean the indoor filters yourself every few weeks during heavy use. A service lets us rinse salt from the outdoor coil, check the fixings and casing for corrosion and confirm the unit is performing properly.
Where should the outdoor unit go on a coastal section?
Ideally on the side of the house sheltered from the sea and prevailing wind, with clear airflow around it and away from bedroom windows next door. We look at the site, the pipe route and service access before recommending a spot.
Our holiday home smells musty when we arrive. What helps?
Closed-up homes in a humid climate trap moisture. A ventilation system that keeps air moving while you are away, plus running the heat pump on heat or dry mode when you arrive, helps. If the heat pump itself smells musty, it likely needs a deep clean.
Do you cover the whole Hibiscus Coast?
Yes. We work across the Hibiscus Coast, from Orewa and Silverdale through Millwater to the end of the Whangaparāoa Peninsula.
