Why it matters

The right heat pump is the one sized for your room

Too small and it runs flat out on cold nights without keeping up. Too big and it wastes power cycling on and off. We measure first, recommend the right size and put the unit where it heats evenly, so your home is warm, dry and cheaper to run.

Common questions

Heat pump questions, answered

More in our heat pump FAQs and the heat pump prices guide.

What size heat pump do I need?

It depends on floor area, ceiling height, insulation, glazing and orientation. Mitre 10's guide suggests 2.5 to 3.5 kW for rooms up to 20 square metres, 3.5 to 5 kW for 20 to 40, and 5 to 7 kW for 40 to 60. High ceilings and poor insulation push the figure up, so we measure every room before quoting.

Is it better to oversize a heat pump?

No. Consumer NZ says oversized units waste energy and cost more upfront, while undersized units struggle. The right size runs efficiently and holds a steady temperature.

Which type of heat pump should I choose?

High wall units suit most lounges and bedrooms. Floor consoles suit rooms with large windows or high ceilings. Multi-split systems run several rooms from one outdoor unit, and ducted systems heat the whole house through hidden ducts.

What should I look for on the energy label?

Use the cold zone ratings for New Zealand, compare annual kWh between models of similar capacity, and check the heating output at 2 degrees as well as 7 degrees.

Can one heat pump heat my whole house?

Usually not evenly, unless the home is small and open-plan. Heat does not travel well through doors and hallways, so most homes need a unit per main area or a ducted system.

Does a heat pump also cool?

Yes. Heat pumps sold for homes heat and cool, and most have a dry mode for humid days.
