How the Calculator Works
The calculator multiplies the room's floor area by its ceiling height to get the volume, then applies a rule-of-thumb heating load in watts per cubic metre for the insulation level, adjusted for how much sun the room gets. The result is the heating capacity in kW a heat pump should deliver on a cold Auckland night. It is a guide for a single room, not a design.
Glass area, open stairwells, draughts, how the room connects to the rest of the house and where the unit can go all change the right answer. That is why every new install starts with a free in-home assessment, where we measure the real room and give you a written quote.
For what drives the cost, read our heat pump prices guide and how the main brands compare, or see heat pump installation, multi-split heat pumps and ducted heat pumps.
