Sizing for cooling is different from sizing for heating. A unit's cooling capacity is usually a little lower than its heating figure, and summer heat gain depends on glass area, which way the windows face, eaves, roof insulation and how many people and computers are in the room. We check all of this in Epsom before recommending a unit.

Epsom air conditioning for large homes: whole-house cooling or just the rooms that need it

Epsom's early 20th century family homes are large, with several living areas, high ceilings and big windows, and the mature trees around Cornwall Park and Manukau Road shade many of them. That shade keeps some rooms comfortable through summer while others, usually those facing north or west with unshaded glass, overheat. The first question is whether you want cooling throughout the house or only in the rooms that get hot.

For whole-house cooling, a ducted system in the ceiling space cools every main room from one hidden indoor unit, with zones so you only cool the rooms in use. It suits Epsom's larger homes well where the ceiling space has room for ducting. If only two or three rooms need it, a multi-split runs several indoor units from one outdoor unit, and high wall units are effective coolers because they push air across the space and let it fall. Home offices and studies are a common addition, since screens and computers add heat all day.

High ceilings help in summer, as warm air rises away from the living space, but they also make it important to size on the room's volume. On larger sections there is more choice of outdoor unit position, but many streets fall within the Special Character Areas Overlay, so we place units and pipe covers where they are discreet and away from neighbours' bedrooms.

Local tip: If only a few rooms overheat, a multi-split for those rooms is usually cheaper to buy and run than cooling the whole house.

Air Conditioning in Epsom: Local Conditions

Central Auckland apartments and newer townhouses are often well sealed and hard to keep cool in summer, so cooling capacity and quiet outdoor units matter most. In villas shaded by street trees, a through-breeze often does much of the work, with dry mode for muggy days.

In villas and bungalows, winter heating usually decides the unit size, and the same unit's cooling and dry mode handle muggy summer days.

Homes in Epsom

Epsom's housing is mostly large family homes from the early 1900s to the 1920s. These houses tend to have several living areas, high ceilings and big windows, and unless retrofitted they have little insulation. One high wall unit in the lounge will not reach the far rooms, so ducted systems through the ceiling space or multi-split systems with an indoor unit in each main room are common choices. Floor consoles suit rooms with high ceilings and large windows. EECA notes that two smaller units can spread heat better than one large unit in a big space.

Most of the suburb had been converted from farmland to housing by the 1920s.

Our installers are in and around Greenwoods Corner and Manukau Road and the rest of Epsom most weeks. For everything else, see heat pumps in Epsom.

How We Handle Air Conditioning in Epsom

We place the indoor unit high on the wall, or in the ceiling where a cassette or ducted unit suits, so cool air is thrown across the room. The outdoor unit goes where it has good airflow and stays away from neighbours' bedroom windows.

Pricing: every job starts with a free in-home assessment and a written quote, with a fixed price agreed before any work starts.

Air Conditioning Epsom FAQs

Should I choose ducted air conditioning for my Epsom home?

Ducted suits large homes with good ceiling space when you want most rooms cooled. If only a few sunny rooms overheat, a multi-split or individual high wall units can do the job for less. We price both.

Do I need consent to install air conditioning?

Auckland Council says most residential heat pump installs do not need a building consent. A licensed electrician must connect the unit, and apartments usually need body corporate approval.

How can I keep cooling costs down?

Use a through-breeze and close curtains when you can, cool only the rooms in use with doors closed, use the timer and keep the filters clean. Consumer NZ suggests an EER of 3 or more indicates efficient cooling.
